Robles Family Party, Summer 2008

OK, so we got there three hours late, but the food and the company was great. I am now a real man because I ate a Polish Sausage (thanks Tony, Adam take note). I also ate way too much of that chocolate cake. The kids swam, cousins got caught up with each others' lives, and we had fun.

Scott started to realize what a dangerous hobby photography can be (let him spend the money, Mandi, but not too much). Ryan developed new strategies for Bachi Ball (throw the golf ball about three inches and let the fun begin). Zenaida revealed the truth about Piglett and I don't know if Katie will ever be the same (I probably spelled Zenaida's name wrong too). Cindie got in a few striking poses with a volleyball. I just wandered around with the camera, and afterwards realized I didn't really take too many shots.

There is a slide show of about 55 pictures you can see if you click this link: SLIDESHOW

Emma

Mason was trying to figure out what the heck that flashing light was that kept blinding him.

She was just totally P.O.'d and I couldn't resist.
Especially because Mike seemed to have no idea what to do.

WARNING: GEEK TALK FOLLOWS.

For any of you who may be photo geeks out there, I was attempting to get the really cool sunset in the night shots. I still need to get my flash off camera, but I'm starting to get the idea down. I shot these in manual mode with a 40D, 24-70L and a 430EX with a Lightsphere diffuser. If I recall, they were shot at about f/8 or so and about 1/10 shutter speed so I could get the ambient light (expose for the sky, you know). Pretty cool how you can freeze action at 1/10 with the flash when it is pretty much dark outside. Anyway, once I get a couple of stands and radio triggers/receivers, these types will be even more fun (Daniel, I envy you). Here are a couple, and there are a couple more on the slideshow.

This one was really just a test. The chairs in the background really are bad, but hey, it was fun.

It's so hard to get Cindie out of her shell.

Love the slideshow!! What a great way to share photos on a blog.

I'm sitting here in my office reading blogs instead of attending to the huge stack of work on my desk. I was trying to get myself motivated to get back to work.

Then I saw the picture of Cindie with the volleyball.

I'm going back to work.

The pictures are great! Am I allowed to steal a couple of the ones of the boys playing Bachi ball (or however you spell it)? I also loved the pics of Mason!

Mandi, you can steal all you want. Joe, get back to work.

Dang! I looked at Emily crying and had to cover my ears.

Scott: don't do it!
Mandi: don't let him!

Yeah, Cindie is a quiet one.

Jim: once you take the flash off camera, there's no going back. Fair warning.

For radio transmitting I use an Elinchrom el-skyport, and love it. There's a transmitter on camera, and a receiver on one of my flashes. If I also use my other two flashes they will fire if I position them so that their sensors "see" the flash of the first, radio-fired flash. Radiopopper should have a much more economical set coming out sometime soon. A search at strobist.com will bring up several posts about Radiopopper.

Thanks Daniel! Jim is the tech guy. I love to take the pictures but the geeky stuff is all him. He makes our pictures look better. Thanks for the heads up.
